Starbucks or Starfucks?

December 25, 2006

Recently, I got hooked up with Starbucks. I must say, as a regular there, their Xmas promotion did appear attractive to me. Simply just spent, and get a ‘reward’.  The idea is trouble-free ; You are given a card, all you need is to complete 15 stickers. Each time you buy – (must be beverages only) you get one sticker. The promotional item up for grab is their Limited Edition 2007 Diary. But soon I realised the ‘effortless’ makes me a Starbucks enthusiasts. I just couldn’t wait to complete my sticker book. It brings back my childhood memories where i used to collect Sailormoon, My Little Pony and CareBears! *Blush* So, whenever i’m looking out for place to hang, I think Starbucks. Whevever i needed a drink, I think Starbucks. Whenever i’m looking for place to work, I think Starbucks.

I hardly fell for advertisements and promotional ‘tactics’ simple because I am an Advertising & Marketing (marketing communication) degree holder. Being exposed to the industry, and executed campaigns for numerous clients, just let’s say, I’m not that naive. But this time, I fell badly for Starbucks’s "deception". I got my first sticker on Nov 21st and I’ve completed 15 stickers on Dec19th.

Given that I only spent RM10 for a beverage to get one sticker, 15 stickers would be:

RM10 x 15 = RM150

I could have bought myself a bottle of perfume, clothes, shoe, accessories, nice dinner or…many many more.

But, I got this:

Am I happy? Yes, for the first 30 minutes. After all, it’s limited edition, cute looking diary, and most importantly, a sense of accomplishment. I bought myself an expensive Xmas present.
